If you’re planning a trip to Hungary or exploring the beautiful Lake Balaton region, make sure Festetics Palace in Keszthely is on your list. This stunning Baroque palace is one of the country’s most impressive landmarks, combining fascinating history, beautiful architecture, and peaceful gardens that are perfect for a relaxing day out.
As someone who enjoys both travelling and photography, I found Festetics Palace to be one of those places where you constantly reach for your camera. Every corner offers something worth capturing, whether it’s the elegant architecture, colourful gardens, or the incredible interiors.
A Little History
The palace was built in 1745 by the wealthy Festetics family and was expanded over several generations into the magnificent estate you can visit today. Unlike many historic buildings in Europe, much of the original furniture and decoration has survived, giving visitors a genuine glimpse into how Hungarian aristocrats once lived.
One of the highlights is the famous Helikon Library, home to around 80,000 books. Walking into the library feels like stepping straight into the pages of a classic novel, and it’s easily one of the most memorable rooms in the palace.
What You’ll See
There’s much more to explore than just the palace itself.
You can wander through beautifully restored reception rooms, elegant dining halls, and luxurious bedrooms, each filled with antique furniture and fascinating details. Outside, the landscaped gardens are ideal for a peaceful walk, while the Carriage Museum, Palm House, Hunting Exhibition, and model railway exhibition offer something a little different if you’re visiting with family or simply want to explore more.
It’s easy to spend several hours here without feeling rushed.
The grand front entrance is one of the most photographed spots, but don’t stop there. The gardens, fountains, statues, and tree-lined pathways provide endless opportunities for beautiful images. During spring and summer, colourful flowers add even more character, while the golden light in the late afternoon gives the palace a warm, elegant glow.
Inside, the chandeliers, sweeping staircases, detailed ceilings, and historic library offer incredible architectural photography opportunities. Just remember that some indoor areas may have photography restrictions, so it’s worth checking before your visit.

One of the best things about visiting Festetics Palace is that it’s right in the heart of Keszthely. After exploring the palace, you can wander through the town’s charming streets, stop for a coffee, enjoy a traditional Hungarian meal, or head down to the shores of Lake Balaton for a relaxing walk.

For me, it was one of those places that reminds you why travelling is so rewarding. You don’t just see beautiful buildings—you experience the stories behind them, discover somewhere new, and come away with memories that last long after you’ve returned home.
